Law firms and Estate agents are often involved in complex and expensive transactions.

To complete these transactions, we need to collect large sums of money on behalf of clients. If law firms do not perform the correct checks, they may unknowingly facilitate money laundering and become targets for money laundering.

Law firms' and Estate Agents' obligations

The Money Laundering, Terrorist Financing and Transfer of Funds Regulations 2017 and the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 are two of the many things we have in place to prevent money laundering in the United Kingdom.

To prevent money laundering, organisations should follow these regulations.

It is a legal and moral obligation for all law firms and estate agents to verify the source of funds in a transaction, and we take this responsibility very seriously.

Please note that...

It can be a little annoying to be asked for proof of where your funds originate, and we appreciate that it can seem intrusive. You should not feel that your solicitor suspects you of money laundering or of being involved in organised crime if you have been asked to provide source of funds information or documentation.

Money laundering and organised crime are very common phenomena. Your cooperation will help us all fight them.
